Friday Top 5: Lego Product Lines

Top 5 Lego product lines.

Meaning types of lego sets, as in: Space Police, Town, Technic, etc.

1) Star Wars Lego.

Star Wars
Star Wars is quite possibly the most popular Sci-fi setting of our time, and as such it has it's own set of cultural idioms. Lego has built upon this to create a line of products that are un-believe-amazing-ly fun. First and foremost, of course, are the lego sets available in the toy store. The AT-ST, the X-Wing, Vader's TIE Adavanced, all faithfully replicated in Lego.

Add to that the advent of the Lego Star Wars set of video games, and you have an instant classic. First place for success and enjoyment factor.

2) Technic

Technic
Technic is the thinking person's Lego. Pulleys, levers, motors, even basic robotics all make their place here. Few kids actually got into Technic, but the ones who did really got the most out of their Lego learning experience. They still have the Technic Crane that has been the staple of the brand for so long.

Second place for the brain filling potential of Technic.

3) Model Team

Model Team
Fun because of their sheer size, Model Team was Lego circa the Mid-90s. The only set that I actually owned was the "Whirl 'n' Wheel Super Truck" These sets came with so mane pieces that you could build four or five of the normal sets with one Model Team set. Additionally, each set came with instructions to build two or three other awesome sets right in the box! They look pretty dated these days, but for their time, they were the masters of traditional Lego creation.

A close 3rd place, almost 2nd, but not as mind-bending as Technic.

4) Blacktron

Blacktron
From the early 90s, Blacktron is not what it sounds like. When I was a kid, the name didn't even faze me. Nowadays it sounds like some late 80s movie title starring Issac Hayes. Big kudos for the name, but even bigger kidos for the sets themselves. The Blacktron sets had the most insanely awesome individual pieces of all, and they were extremely versatile. The neon yellow transparent pieces defined all on my own creations for years to come.

5) City

City
City has been around for as long as Lego has. The most recent version of city is the best by far, integrating Lego trains with all the rest of the Police, Fire, and other genres that have graced the City stage over the past decades. Good wholesome fun, generic, yes, but also easily accessible.

Comments:

Yes, well done on the Lego 5. I was always that kid who got the big bucket of regular legos, but was never allowed to get "real" sets. All I ever wanted was the damn castle...

I had a buddy that had all the Castle lego sets. It was no fun playing with them because he never let me take them apart. They always had to remain in pristine condition, as if the purpose of the legos was to build the thing shown on the instructions and then marvel at it for all time.

Making this list made me go into the storage area and dig out my legos. Props to my parents for holding onto them, they are a fountain of amusement for me and those who wish to laugh at me.
