This is what I would look like had I not gone to college or moved in with a girl and all the other stuff that moved me away from my Jabba-the-Hutt-like high-school lifestyle.

Take your pick, either or both of these guys. Come get some, laideees.

Slight Epiphany

I came to Thomson FindLaw thinking that I was going to be in way over my head. What I got was a well-paid boring job in the midst of a growing corporation. I am not in over my head, I have all the skills that I need to do this job well. I have no illusions about Thomson any longer. It is a textbook definition of corporate ladder-climbing, and the thought of trying to far exceed "performance goals" and attend "team building" exercises made my dreadfully nervous.

Well, today I had something of an enlightening moment. I realized that I am extremely happy with the amount of money that I am making, and that for the time being I don't have to play the corporate game. I can come in, do my work, and leave, not worrying about whether I did enough to get me promoted when the next person steps down.

I realized that I truly don't care about advancement. I'm perfectly fine here for the time being, and that is a big load off. I can look forward to going home and taking a nice long bike ride.

Having a yard is the best ever.

This weekend I am going to try to do the following:

  • Finish the compost pile
  • Build the tabletop thinger in the grove thinger.
  • Build a little mini-shed thing for the recycling/hose/etc.
  • Finish lining the paths in the back yard with rocks.

I fully expect that it will be awesome and exhausting.

I'd also like to find my bike shoes and ride the gateway from start to finish.

Adventures in walking down hallways.

It's amazing the way a new job works.

You start off being in way over your head, and then a week later you feel like you can take on the entire corporation.

I had to find my paycheck today, so after a couple of emails, I got a name and a place where the checks are held. I strode off away from my desk, eager to nab my first paycheck at this much higher rate, picturing myself depositing it in the bank later today.

I got completely lost. Not only did I not find the place, I had no clue how to get back to my desk, in order to clarify directions or look it up in the directory. I walked around for 15 minutes, peering down hallways, Smiling at people as I pass them for the third time going a different direction (I couldn't ask them for directions, that would have been admitting defeat).

Finally I noticed something that looked vaguely familiar, a particular plant that had a gold ribbon tied around one of its leaves. I had noticed it before, and it served to orient me well enough to get back to my desk. I got to the paycheck place after looking it up in the directory and cross-referencing it with some fire-exit maps, and felt a large wash of victory perk me up a bit.

This place is crazy, but I think I'm getting used to it.
