Mr. President
SeƱor Obama takes his seat in the big chair. I guess this means I can relax for a while. The speech he gave at the inauguration was quite good; many layers of depth, lots of great imagery. Really, I feel that it set the stage for a real shift away from President-as-peer that we have been living with, and toward President-as-leader.
Sure, I have my hopes for the coming couple of years, but I feel that I must be skeptical. It is a weird feeling to experience patriotism after my entire young-adult life with an intense dislike for the government. I was one of those jerks who mentioned moving to Canada to get away. Seems silly now, but I bet there are a bunch of folks on the other side of the aisle feeling similarly (though maybe not in Canada's direction). Still, it pays to be watchful. I am quite sure of my choice to support this guy, but one never knows.
So all of us who now feel vindicated for our years under what we considered to be a dysfunctional government must hold our tongues. I am confident in Mr. "Smarty Pants," but he needs to do his thing in order to earn some trust from others. If he can turn this boat around, perhaps finally people will start to migrate over the aisle more. I confess, in my dreams the election in a couple dozen years will be a contest between the Democrats and the Green party, Perhaps with the Libertarians tossed in there as a third party.
